Can TikTok Reviews Be Trusted?

In the age of social media, it’s easy to get swayed by influencer endorsements. But how can you tell if a new product review is authentic or just part of a paid partnership? Putting ourselves at the forefront (for argumentative sake) we are entering the product pool with a never-done-before, never tried before product.

Lucky for us, we have had all our Stimmie Reusable Toothpick reviews and UGC content come through unpaid and 100% organic. So we just might know a thing or two about authentic feedback. But we are still living for all the goods out there that are meant to make you look good, feel good, anytime, anywhere. So how do you know if that impulse TikTok purchase will be worth the hype or if the brand just had a really healthy influencer marketing budget?

Here’s how to separate genuine feedback from marketing hype.

1. Look for Unbiased Feedback

Authentic reviews often include specific details about the user experience, both pros and cons. Vague, overly positive comments may indicate a paid promotion rather than a real user experience.

2. Check for Disclosure

Hashtag Paid Ad. We've all seen this. Trustworthy influencers and bloggers will disclose if they were paid or received a product for free. This transparency is required by law in many countries, so be wary of reviews that lack this information.

3. Cross-Reference Reviews

Don’t rely on just one source. Check multiple reviews across different platforms. If a product consistently receives positive feedback from various users, it’s more likely to be genuine. Our favourite site to discover new products and read authentic reviews are on Thingtesting. If you come across a new brand, check here first to read real, unbiased reviews that come from "testers" aka, customers, not from creators.

4. Use Trusted Review Sites

Certain websites have built a reputation for reliable and unbiased reviews. Sites that write up a “Best Products” list are known for their thorough testing and honest opinions.

5. Beware of Overly Polished Content

Authentic reviews are often written in a casual tone and may include imperfections or grammar mistakes. Highly polished, professionally shot reviews may be part of an influencer campaign.

While influencer marketing can offer valuable insights, it’s important to know how to spot authentic reviews. By following these tips and trusting reputable sources, you can make more informed purchasing decisions.
